Report from daycare (26th May 2015) - Sharing
On Thursday, one of our newer classmates spent her second day in the
Toddler Room. She was somewhat anxious, and would often follow me (Anna)
around as I moved. I encouraged her to explore the many resources in
the room, as there were many fun things she could be engaged in. It was
not until she observed Lucas playing by the construction mat, that she
really expressed interest. Curiously she came over to where Lucas was,
and watched in amusement as Lucas wheeled the wooden car up and down a
ramp.
"Round and round, round and round" Lucas sang.
"What you saying?" the new Toddler asked, smiling.
Lucas looked at her and then continued riding his car around the hill
and through the tunnel. The new Toddler picked up a wooden car similar
to the one in Lucas's hand and she too began driving it around the top
shelf of the construction unit. Lucas did not seem to mind that she too
was using the play space, and at one point even offered her some other
vehicles such as green cars, and towing trucks to try driving. What
great sharing, Lucas!
Report from daycare (21st May 2015) - Pilot
"Look, Viana, I got a blue top today," Rose proudly said to me (Viana) as I walked into the Toddler Room in the morning.
"I got blue too," Xaiver said, pointing at his jumper.
"Nice colours!" I responded, "Shall we do another colour activity today?"
"Yeah!" the children collectively cheered.
"Are we doing the bunny?" Rose asked.
"We did the bunny yesterday. Would you like to do something else today?" I said.
"Yes, yes!" Rose jumped and clapped.
The children were provided with a big white tray and many colourful
circle shaped pieces of paper, and encouraged to place the colour-
pieces onto the tray.
"They look like lollies!" Phillipa said whilst holding the resources.
When I took out the red and orange coloured ones, Xavier pointed at the
pieces and confidently said, "it's red, and this one is orange. There is
a difference between red and orange".
"Good job! Xavier!" I replied.
"I got a green, and it goes ...here!" Jack was very confident and exactly knew where the pieces were supposed to go.
"This one should go here." Isabelle said whilst standing by the table.
She offered assistance to her friends when she noticed some of them
struggling slightly with the task of matching the colours.
It was lovely for us educators to witness the children following through
with their educator's instructions, and their kind acts of offering
assistance to others during the activity. The experience was
additionally a good chance for the children to extend their
identification skills in colors, and the strategies in their exploration
and learning.
To extend upon the children's recent exploration on the role of
clothing, today Anna brought out a range of costumes and suits
representing a range of occupations. There were policemen/women
uniforms, chef uniforms, scientist coats, and pilot uniforms. Anna
explained to the children that uniforms serve a variety of purposes such
as protecting the wearer's skin, or for identification purposes. Lucas
enjoyed wearing the pilot uniform and was observed clapping when Anna
asked him "Are you Captain Lucas?" Xavier meanwhile wore the policeman
uniform and pretended the red climbing bridge was his police vehicle.
"Neee nawww, neee nawww!" he said excitedly. Some of the other Toddlers
and even some Pre-schoolers hung onto the beams of the climbing bridge,
catching a 'lift' with Constable Xavier. It was great to witness the
children actively using their imagination in a dramatic play experience.
We educators will continue providing the children with a range of
resources that inspire the children to think and image.
